Buying & Maintaining a Piano

Is it better to repair an old piano or buy a new one?

The honest answer is: it depends. A good older instrument, properly maintained or rebuilt, can easily last another lifetime.

It depends

You'll get different answers depending on who you ask. A music store without a rebuilding shop may tell you new is better. A rebuilder who doesn't sell new pianos may tell you the opposite. The truth is somewhere in the middle, and depends on your situation and how you view things.

Some people appreciate the quality and history of older instruments; others feel a new one will last longer. In reality, a good-quality older instrument that's maintained — or rebuilt to original or better specs — can easily last another lifetime, with little or no more expense than a new piano.

Some new pianos today aren't built with the same quality of components as those from 50–100 years ago. In the end it may come down to what you like in the sound and appearance. Just don't be afraid to consider repairing or rebuilding an older instrument — your technician can help you decide.
