Piano Tuning & Regulation

How often should I have my piano tuned?

Most home pianos need tuning at least twice a year — but the right schedule depends on your piano, your home, and how much it's played.

Tuning frequency

Most piano manufacturers recommend tuning four times per year, or once per season. In practice, tuning frequency ranges from once a year for a lightly-used home piano to once a day (or more!) for a heavily-used concert grand. The right frequency for you depends on several factors:

  • The age and condition of your piano
  • Where your piano is placed in the home or room
  • The number of hours per week it's played
  • The level of the pianist
  • What the piano is used for

Your tuning schedule

Your piano technician can help you decide the best schedule. Most home pianos should be tuned at least twice per year to stay in tune, while a teacher's piano may need tuning every other month. The worst thing you can do is let the pitch drop below A-440 (standard pitch) — when that happens, several tunings in quick succession may be needed to re-stabilize the piano, and no real long-term savings is realized.

A piano that's tuned regularly stays in tune between tunings. A piano that doesn't get regular service never really stabilizes, and can go out of tune within weeks — or even days — after a tuning. Avoid that frustration by following your technician's advice.
